Exporter problems - VM crashing

Message We are running SFEE in a VM on ESX Server 3.5.
When SFEE standalone is started, the machine (VM image) slows to a crawl when the process 'exporter" starts, and after a while (minutes) the kernel kills jboss due to a memory allocation failure. Starting SFEE integration alone doesn't cause any problems.

By watching 'top' during startup, I've noticed that 'exporter' uses a very large amount of memory (99% of 1.5G as well as all the swap).

We've recently migrated the original VM image to the ESX environment, and the problem began 3-4 days after this.
During troubleshooting, I've upgraded the installation from 4.3 SP1 to 4.4 SP1 (DL6), which went fine, but didn't solve the problem.
I've attached a screenshot of top's state when just before jboss is killed.
